Media Violence and It's Impact.

With Bob Kings' lectures coming to a close I am forced to put some thought into exactly how has the media effected me. I must admit it is much greater than I had previously realized. Media is everywhere and ever since I was little I have been surrounded by it. It taught me that bad things happen to good people and that while bad people may not win it is rare when good people do. People often surround themselves in violence by religiously following the daily new broadcasts. Violent media is everywhere and people love it.

One must remember that this is not new. It is in our wiring to be attracted to violence. Deep down we all are primal beasts on some level. When something we truly care about is threatened humans have a funny way of physically defending it. In the Chicago of the late 1800's workers would take to the streets and riot to defend their rights. In August of 1988 New York City plunged into chaos when the power went out. People returned to their natural state of predator. People were rioting to get or control anything they could. When people see violence in the media are they secretly yearning for that violence? Are they attracted to it?

Children are special, they are not yet animals. My group decided to create a public service announcement in attempt to educate the public that children often see violence that is not suited such a young audience. my peers and I attempted to convey that young kids see violence way more than we expect them to. I fear that if this trend continues than future generations will be just as if not more jaded and accustomed to violence than we currently are.

One thing that I would do differently is try to find a way to give this message a higher impact. I do legitimately fear that people will become more and more jaded. It's not just a statement I have concocted for a grade. Apathy is a rut that is hard to crawl out of, that I wish on no one.  If there was some way to make people care about the world I would do it. I guess that letting a few people know that today's children are on a fast track to becoming tomorrows jaded jerks is a start.
